July 2nd, 2005 was a day that should have made a difference. Across the world there were concerts put on by over a hundred artists in eight different cities. Hundreds of thousands attended these shows, even more tuned in on their televisions. Many people have the white bracelets to show that they paid attention... But did they?
Now for those who have no idea as to what I am referring, let me enlighten you. These concerts were a part of Live 8, an event put on to bring awareness to the poverty levels that have been for many years in Africa. It was a push to get the G8 nations (live 8... get it?) to raise the amount of support they give to developing nations by mammoth sums. Make poverty history.
Did it work? Will poverty become history?
We can sit here contemplating the effects of this event and wonder what if what others have done will change the stories we tell our children about Africa, or we can join together and help fight this trend of apathy that has become so prevalent in today's Christian society. Make Apathy History.
Sounds odd, doesn't it. The whole premise of July 2nd was to rid the world of poverty. Think it'll work? What if we rid the world of apathy first? Would it make a difference? There's only one way to find out...
